Local Kitchens has shuttered more than half of its locations

Local Kitchens, the culinary collective and ghost kitchen concept, has shuttered approximately half of its locations in recent months, including its Los Angeles prototype that opened in June and closed less than five months later. The multi-brand restaurant now operates just six Northern California locations in Cupertino, Davis, Lafayette, Mill Valley, Redwood Shores, and San Bruno, down from 13 units at its peak.

Farmer J brings an anti-slop-bowl concept from London

London-based Farmer J is bringing its anti-slop-bowl concept to New York City in mid-December, targeting health-conscious young professionals with its signature Fieldtray—essentially a meat-and-two-sides served on compartmentalized trays that separate dishes like old-school cafeteria service. Founded by Jonathan Recanati and his wife Ali in 2014, the fast-casual Mediterranean concept operates 15 UK locations and has raised $23 million for U.S. expansion, positioning itself as an alternative to the customizable bowl craze dominating NYC's fast-casual dining scene.

Buzzworthy Brands: This fast-casual-ish concept is ramping up franchising and expanding beyond its home market of greater Washington, D.C.

The full-service brand has eight locations here and plans to open seven more over the next two years. It sees a big opportunity for its broad, scratch-made menu and stylish restaurants.

Riding in competitor Dave's Hot Chicken's wake, this fast-casual chain plans to grow from 33 to 50 units by next year. At Angry Chickz, it's about the bowls.

With the fourth unit opening next week, the sandwich chain is attempting to demonstrate how "real food" can be scaled efficiently. More proof may be needed. But could this be, quite literally, the next Chipotle?

Washington D.C. restaurateur Rose Previte has launched Maydan Market Los Angeles, a groundbreaking 10,000-square-foot venue that brings her Michelin-starred restaurant Maydan and Compass Rose to the West Coast while pioneering a new small restaurant business support model.

The celebrity-owned fast-casual chicken chain is working through some operational challenges under Craveworthy Brands. Fixing what ails the brand will take time, said CEO Josh Halpern.
