Grubhub customers will soon be able to earn cash when they dine out at certain restaurants.

Wonder, the owner of the restaurant delivery app, said Tuesday that it has acquired Claim, a restaurant rewards app that specializes in cash-back rewards. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The company plans to integrate Claim into Grubhub, which will allow restaurants to offer weekly cash-back promotions to new customers for dine-in or pickup. These promotions will be in addition to Grubhub’s existing marketing tools, which include sponsored listings, discounts and loyalty programs.

The company said the new offering will help restaurants attract new customers and drive repeat visits, while also helping consumers save money.

It comes as Grubhub competitors DoorDash and Uber Eats are doing more to court dine-in customers. Last year, both apps began offering reservations and special deals for dining out.

Here’s how Claim will work on Grubhub:

Customers can opt in to receive cash-back reward offers from restaurants. Each week, they’ll get offers from three restaurants that Claim/Grubhub thinks they will like, based on their past purchases. The customer can choose one, and they will have a week to redeem it. After their visit, they’ll automatically receive cash back; there is no need to scan the app or enter a code at purchase.

Restaurants will be able to opt in to offering these rewards and will be charged a portion of each reward that is redeemed. For example, if a customer redeems an $8 reward, Claim would send the customer $8, and Grubhub would pay Claim $2.

Boston-based Claim was founded in 2021 by Sam Obletz and Tap Stephenson. In 2023, it landed an investment from large venture capital firm Sequoia.

It marks Wonder’s sixth acquisition following deals for Grubhub, Blue Apron, Tastemade, Spyce and Relay. The food hall/meal kit/delivery company has been expanding quickly behind more than $2 billion in private funding.
