Starbucks wants its customers to stay awhile

Inside the company’s newest redesign in Bridgehampton, New York. Starbucks plans to redesign up to 1,000 locations with the intent of making its coffee shops friendlier for in-store customers.

Dambisa Moyo, an economist and co-founder of family office investment firm Versaca Investments, was also named to the coffee giant’s board of directors.

Customers will be able to add syrups and sauces to unflavored drinks for a single, flat price. The company is also testing changes to its mobile ordering app to increase pricing transparency.

The Starbucks CEO detailed his “Back to Starbucks” plan to 14,000 cheering leaders of the coffee shop giant in Las Vegas this month. And he said the effort is important far beyond the company.

The company is giving managers more say in new product and operations tests at an early stage. It is also giving them more say as the company increases staffing levels this summer.

The coffee shop giant, whose sales weakness has extended into its second year, named Mike Grams chief operating officer, while the chief legal officer is departing.

CEO Brian Niccol said the coffee shop giant’s second-quarter results were “disappointing,” but he said there are signs of progress, and the company plans to launch a new service model.

The coffee shop chain starting in May will require employees to wear black shirts with black or blue denim jeans or khaki pants to “allow our iconic green apron to shine.”

The Bottom Line: The coffee shop giant had its worst year since the Great Recession in 2024. That proved to be an opportunity for upstart coffee brands like Dutch Bros and 7 Brew.

The coffee chain is hiring the team behind Empower Delivery, the software company founded by Starbucks’ new chief development officer, Meredith Sandland.
